5/2 - Cal wins USILA National Championship! California 16, BYU 15 (OT)
California defeated defending champion BYU in sudden death overtime
to earn the 1998 USILA National Championship of Collegiate Club Lacrosse
in St. Louis, Missouri. Senior Attackman J.P. Harbor (3 goals, 2 assists)
of San Francisco University H.S. picked up a loose ball and scored with
1:04 remaining in the overtime period. The Golden Bears took an early
3 - 0 advantage and never trailed in the game. BYU tied the game with
1 second remaining in regulation as senior midfielder Cameron Pratt
(2 goals) scored a goal to force overtime. Senior Attackman Alex
Mast (4 goals) of The Cate School earned Offensive Tournament MVP honors
for California. Senior BYU goalie Mike Nelson (24 saves) of Fairfield
H.S. (Conn.) took Defensive Tournament MVP honors.
The scoring opened early as Alex Mast scored an unassisted goal for
the Golden Bears, 7 seconds into the game. Two minutes later, senior
Attackman Jake Zim (2 goals, 1 assist) of Berkeley H.S. added another
unassisted goal. Assisted by Jake Zim, senior midfielder Justin
Stephens (1 goal, 1 assist) completed the early 3 goal advantage for
Cal with a goal at the 11:03 mark of the 1st quarter. Attackman
Travis Clater (6 goals) got BYU on the scoreboard, assisted by
midfielder Scott Winterton, with 10:31 remaining in the 1st quarter.
The two teams traded several goals and at the end of the first quarter,
Cal led BYU, 7 - 4.
With 7:56 remaining in the 2nd quarter BYU's Travis Clater, assisted
by Attackman Clint Felsted (2 assists) of Dulaney H.S., scored to
closed the gap. Alex Mast answered for Cal 20 seconds later with
an unassisted goal to increase to increase the lead back to 8 - 5.
This proved to be the Golden Bears only goal of the 2nd quarter.
BYU added 2 more goals in the quarter and at halftime the score was
Cal 8, BYU 7.
The Cougars Cameron Pratt (2 goals) tied the game at the beginning of
the 3rd quarter with an assist from Junior Attackman Matt Davis
(2 goals, 2 assists). Cal and BYU traded goals back and forth and
with 3:43 left in the 3rd quarter, Freshmen midfielder Kevin Moon
(1 goal, 1 assist) gave Cal at 11 - 10 advantage. The 3rd quarter
ended with this one goal lead for California.
The 4th quarter saw Alex Mast score with 13:38 remaining in regulation
to up the Bear lead to two goals. 30 seconds later, BYU answered
with a Matt Davis goal, assisted by freshmen midfielder Chris Hardy
(3 goals, 1 assist) from the Landon School. One minute later, BYU's
Travis Clater scored to tie the game at the 12:03 mark of the 4th
quarter. J.P. Harbor scored his 3rd goal of the game unassisted 45
seconds later to give Cal back the lead. Freshman midfielder John
Principi (3 goals) scored unassisted a mere 16 seconds later to give
the Golden Bears a 14 - 12 lead. And Alex Mast added his 4th goal of
the game to give Cal a 15 - 12 advantage at the 8:24 mark of the 4th
quarter. This proved to be Cal's final goal of regulation play. BYU
went to work. Chris Hardy scored unassisted with 6:59 left to close
the gap to 2 goals. 18 seconds later, another Landon School product
Jared Archibald (1 goal, 1 assist) added a quick to to bring the score
to Cal 15, BYU 14. The frantic play continued for the remaining
6 minutes of regulation. BYU took several shots in the final few
minutes but was denied in part by the fine work of Cal goalie,
freshman Robbie Warner (from San Diego). He finished the game with
15 saves. A loose ball push call against Cal gave the ball back to
BYU at midfield with 7 seconds remaining. BYU midfielder Cameron
Pratt drove toward the Cal goal, dodging 2 defenders, and scored
the final goal on a bounce shot that caught the upper corner with
1 second remaining.
In overtime, Cal won the face-off and was able to get two shots off.
BYU Goalie Mike Nelson made a nice save. And the ball was given
back to BYU after a Cal turnover. BYU came down the field and took
a few shots of their own. But the Cougars were denied by the Cal
Defense. Cal Goalie Robbie Warner made a quick save of his own.
Cal scooped up a ground ball and brought it down field. After
another missed shot, Cal was able to call a timeout. This allowed
the Cal Coach Joe Proud to set the final play which ultimately
decided the championship. Senior Attackman J.P. Harbor got the
ball up top and scored with 1:04 remaining in the overtime period.
The entire Cal bench rushed the field to celebrate their 1998
National Championship.
Cal dominated the game statistics with a 68 - 36 lead in groundballs
and a 62 - 45 advantage in shots taken. The game was mostly penalty
free: Only 4 penalties were called on Cal, and 2 penalties on BYU
for the entire game. The RMILL champion BYU Cougars finish their
1998 season with a 13 - 4 record. The WCLL Champion Cal Golden
Bears ended the season with 14 - 1 final record.

5/1 - Cal advances to USILA Finals. California 17, Simon Fraser 11.
In the 2nd semifinal game on Friday evening, the Cal Golden Bears
defeated the Clansman of Simon Fraser University, 17 - 11. The
Bears held Simon Fraser scoreless in the 2nd quarter, in opening a
11 - 3 lead at half. California was led by Senior attackman
Justin Stephens (5 goals, 1 assist) and Senior Midfielder Ned
opham (3 goals, 1 assist). Simon Fraser Goalie Tyrone Willushaw
had 18 saves in the losing effort for the Clansmen. Sophomore
Attackman Peter Morgan added 4 goals and 2 assists for SFU.
Cal outshot the Clansmen 44 - 26 in the semifinal victory.
Simon Fraser finishes in 1998 season with its first defeat of
the season and a final record of 12 - 1.

4/30 - Cal advances to USILA Semi-Finals. California 17, Georgia 7.
The California Golden Bears defeated the Georgia Bulldogs in the 2nd
quarterfinal game from St. Louis by 10 goals. Cal dominated the 1st
half, outscoring Georgia 10 goals to 1. Team captain Alex
Mast had 4 goals to lead the scoring for the Bears. Justin
Stephens also added 3 goals at attack for the 1998 WCLL champs.
The 1998 SELC Champs (Georgia) were led by attackman Shawn Collins
(2 goals) and Will Wallace (2 goals). Goalie Waldo Terrell
(1998 SELC Defensive Tournament MVP) had 20 saves in the
losing cause for the Bulldogs.

4/26 - CAL UNSEATS WHITTIER TO CLAIM WCLL CHAMPIONSHIP, 16-15

Cal won it's third WCLL Championship in five years by defeating the
Whittier Poets 16-15 in overtime. The game was a closely fought battle
that see-sawed back and forth through the first three quarters of play.
Cal finished the first quarter and was up three goals, but Whittier
came back strong and led by as much as four. Entering the fourth quarter
two goals down, Cal fought back and went on a four goal run. However,
the game was far from over as Whittier put in two goals in the final
two minutes of play and tied the game up with just 16 seconds to go.
The Bears would come up big in overtime, though. Al Mast fed a pass to
Ned Topham for the winning goal and it was all over. However, the biggest
hero of the game was freshman goalie and game MVP Robbie Warner, who came
up with 30 saves in the net.

4/25 - Cal bound for WCLL Championship with 21-6 win over Arizona
Cal defeated Arizona by a score of 21-6 in the WCLL Semifinal game, giving
the Bears a shot at the defending champion, Whittier College. Cal played well
in all aspects of the game, particluarly in faceoffs and groundballs. J.P.
Harbour (5G,0A), Kevin Moon (3G, 2A), Al Mast (3G, 1A), Jon Bruner (2G, 1A)
and Nick Wilsey (0G, 3A) were among the leaders of the fourteen different
Cal players posting offensive points. Defensively, Justin Collins, Fred
Sanchez and Steve Dirkes continued to dominate and were supported by
Tyler Kreitz and Tommy Hattori at longpole middie. Robbie Warner also
continued to play well, saving 13 shots.

4/18 - Cal defeats Stanford 19-8 in WCLL Quarterfinals
The Cal Bears earned a spot in the WCLL Final Four by defeating
Stanford 19-8. Stanford scored the first goal which prompted a 14-1
run by Cal that allowed the Cal reserves to see action in the final
quarter of play. J.P. Harbour (4G, 0A), Justin Stephens (5G, 0A),
Jake Zim (3G, 4A) and Al Mast (2G, 2A) all led the Cal offense
while Justin Collins, Fred Sanchez and Steve Dirkes continued to
dominate the defensive side of the field. Robbie Warner also
played a strong game, stopping 12 shots on goal.

4/15 - Cal beats Santa Clara, 26-10
Cal finished the regular season by defeating Santa Clara
by a score of 26-10. Cal finished the first half with only
a 5 goal lead, but came on strong in the second half,
outscoring Santa Clara 15-4. The Cal offense was led by
Justin Stephens (6G, 2A), J.P. Harbour (5G, 1A), Jake
Zim (3G, 3A) and Matt Hammond (3G, 1A). On the defensive end,
Justin Collins, Fred Sanchez and Steve Dirkes all played well,
while freshman goalie Robbie Warner stopped 15 shots on goal.

4/11 - Cal wins Big Game against Stanford, 15-6
The Cal Bears defeated arch-rival Stanford by a score of 15-6 in a
highly emotional game at Stanford. Cal jumped to a 7 point lead in
the first quarter and at the end of the first half was up by 11.
The offense was lead by J.P. Harbour (5G, 1A), Justin Stephens
(4G, 2A) and Kevin Moon (2G, 1A). Defensively, Tyler Kreitz, Fred
Sanchez and Dan Tessieri all played strong games, while Robbie Warner
stopped 21 shots on goal.

3/31 - Cal over Hayward, 14-0
Cal defeated Cal State Hayward 14-0 in a game that allowed
the Cal players to see time outside their typical positions.
Tommy Hattori (2G, 0A), Justin Collins (2G, 0A) and Steve
Dirkes (1G, 2A) were among the offensive leaders, while Justin
Stephens, Al Mast and Matt Hammond played most of the game at
the defensive end. In goal, Teal Watkins had Cal's first shutout
of the year.
3/29 - Cal defeats Chapman, 26-3
The Cal Bears improved their record to 8-1 by defeating Chapman 26-3.
Cal seniors Jake Zim (4G, 7A), Al Mast (4G, 4A), J.P. Harbour (4G, 0A),
Justin Stephens (5G, 0A) and Ned Topham (1G, 3A) all played excellent
games in their final home appearance. Senior midfielders Will Ratzan
and Pat Chiang (1G, 0A), who scored his first career goal, also both
played well in their final home game. On the defensive end, Steve
Dirkes, Justin Collins and Dan Tessieri all had strong games, allowing
just 7 shots on goal. Freshman goalie Robbie Warner (6S, 1G) was aided
by Teal Watkins (2S, 2G), who played his first game in the net.

3/21 - Cal downs Illinois, 18-6
 
Cal defeated Illinois by a score of 18-6 at home. Cal jumped
out to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter and dominated throughout
the game. Illinois mounted a minor comeback attempt in the
third quarter, pulling within six goals, only to be shut out
by Cal in the final quarter. Freshmen Kevin Moon (5G, 0A) and
John Principi (2G, 2A) helped lead the Cal offense with captain
Al Mast (3G, 1A). On the defensive side, goalie Robbie Warner
pulled down 12 saves while defenders Justin Collins, Fred
Sanchez and Steve Dirkes shut down the Illinois offense.

3/17 - Cal over St. Mary's, 28-2
 
Cal defeated St. Mary's College by a score of 28-2 at Cal.
This game presented an opportunity to Cal's reserves to play and
they made the most of it. Nick Cooper (4G, 2A), Nick Wilsey (2G,
1A), Jeff Wiley (1G, 0A) all scored their first goals of the
season, while Hann Mao (2G, 0A) scored the first goals of his life.
Other leaders were Matt Hammond (4G, 4A) and John Principi (2G, 3A).
Overall, 14 Cal players scored offensive points. The defensive
highlight of the game was goalie Elias Hill (4S, 1G) stepping
into the cage for the first time. Defenders Teal Watkins, Steve
Weis and Tyler Kreitz held St. Mary's to 7 shots. Longpole
middies Tommy Hattori and Dan Tesseri also played strong games.

3/14 - Cal loses to Whittier, 15-13
Cal lost to the Whittier Poets by a score of 15-13 in a close game
played at Whittier. Cal came out strong in the first quarter,
jumping to a three goal lead over Whittier. However, Whittier
came back and ended the first half leading by a goal. The lead
changed hands several times in the second until late in the
fourth quarter when Whittier managed to tie it up. With under
two minutes to go, Whittier was able to score two quick goals
and hold off the Cal offense until time expired. Cal's offensive
stat leaders were Jake Zim (2G, 2A), J.P. Harbour (4G, 1A) and John
Principi (2G, 1A). On the defensive side, Robbie Warner pulled down
27 saves, while Justin Collins, Fred Sanchez and Steve Dirkes all
played well at close defense. Midfielders Mike Simpson, Nick Cooper,
Jeff Wiley and Nick Wilsey all played a major factor in the game on
both sides of the field as well.

3/7 - Cal upsets UCSB, 17-9
The Cal Bears defeated #2 UCSB by a score of 17-9 and
improved their record to 5-0. The Bears jumped to a three point lead in the
first quarter and never looked back. Cal executed a strong team
offense and had 9 different players score goals. Jake Zim (1G, 3A), Al
Mast (4G, 1A) and J.P. Harbour (4G, 0A) led the offense in points and
were supported by solid middie lines. Cal's defense was led by
Justin Collins, Fred Sanchez and Steve Dirkes. Tyler Kreitz and Dan
Tessieri also had strong games at longpole middie. Robbie Warner,
a league leading goalie, stopped 20 shots and helped shut down UCSB's
offense.

2/28 - Cal beats Arizona, 15-10
Cal defeated the Arizona Laxcats on the road by a score of 15-10. Arizona
jumped to a quick lead in the game and was able to capitalize on
several man down situations. The game was close at the half, with
Cal only leading by two. However, in the second half of the game Cal
came together and produced 8 goals, 2 of which resulted from a man down
situation created by an illegal Arizona stick. The offense was led by
Jake Zim (1G, 5A), Alex Mast (4G, 1A), and J.P. Harbour (3G, 1A).
Defensively, midfielders Nick Wilsey and Jeff Wiley both had strong
games, while goalie Robbie Warner pulled down 19 saves.
2/25 - Cal wins against Davis, 15-10
Cal improved its record to 3-0 by defeating Davis at home by
a score of 15-10. Cal jumped to a quick lead and held it throughout the game.
Davis took advantage of several man down situations, but suffered due to the
lack of their starting goalie. Cal's offense was led by Alex Mast (2G, 3A),
Jake Zim (1G, 6A), Justin Stephens (3G, 1A) and J.P. Harbour (2G, 2A).
Freshman goalie Robbie Warner had another strong game, pulling down 21 saves.
Cal's defense also played well and was led by Justin Collins, Fred Sanchez
and Tyler Kreitz.
2/14 - Cal Over Chico St., 14-3
Cal defeated Chico St. by a score of 14-3. Both teams had to cope
with very muddy field conditions which led to many ground ball battles.
This game proved to be a team effort with seven different players
scoring goals and a strong showing off the Cal bench. The Cal offense
was led by Justin Stephens (4G), Kevin Moon (2G, 3A), J.P. Harbour
(3G, 1A) and Jake Zim (2G, 2A). On the defensive side, Robby Warner
pulled down 7 saves while longpoles Tyler Kreitz and Tommy Hattori
both had strong games.
2/7 - Cal Defeats Sonoma State 12-10
Cal had a strong opening game, defeating Sonoma State
by a score of 12-10. Cal led throughout the game and fended off
several Sonoma State comeback attempts. Game offensive leaders were Kevin
Moon (4 goals), Alex Mast (3 goals, 3 assists) and Jake Zim (3 assists).
Defensively, Cal was led by Robbie Warner, with 16 saves and defensemen
Justin Collins, Fred Sanchez and Steve Dirkes.
