2022 Team Captains and Sciutto #4 Jersey Announced

by Admin

The Cal Men's Lacrosse program is pleased to announce our Team Captains for the 2021-22 season and the recipient of the Doug Sciutto Memorial #4 Jersey. As per tradition, player votes were submitted directly to the head coach.

Team Captains

“Several upperclassmen received votes- Andy Harris, Zach Blake, Ryan McAvoy, Cole Heires, Micah Grim, Ethan Deller and Josh Blanchard- a sign that our leadership is widespread,” said head coach Ned Webster. “But there were three who received the majority of the votes.”

This year's captains (in alphabetical order) are: fifth year senior Brendan Cook (#20, Chatham, NJ), graduate student Finnian Meagher (#13, Baltimore, MD) and senior Jack Ronan (#32, Danville, CA). All three of these men have consistently represented Cal Men's Lacrosse at the highest level in the classroom, on the field and in the community.

This is the second year serving as captain for Cook and the first year for Ronan. For an unprecedented fourth straight year, graduate student Finn Meagher has been recognized as a captain by his peers.

“I love the fact that we have a captain leading each third of the field: an attackman, a midfielder and a defenseman,” said Webster. “The most successful teams are player-led and, with these three at the helm, we are already in a solid position to grow individually and collectively.”

Congratulations to these Golden Bears who have brought this program to new heights!

Doug Sciutto #4 Memorial Jersey

When Doug Sciutto attempted to break down a locked door at a burning fraternity house on Sept. 8, 1990, at the University of California-Berkeley, he was trying to rescue his friends from the flames that engulfed the structure. He never made it out of the building that day, but his memory will live on whenever the Golden Bears step on the lacrosse field this spring.

Sciutto, a former captain and MVP for the Golden Bears, had his No. 4 retired that year out of respect, and it had never been worn for 25 years.

With the blessing of Sciutto’s father, Bob, and in an effort to better remember and celebrate Sciutto’s legacy, the program unretired the No. 4 in the Fall of 2015. It will now be worn each year by the senior who best demonstrates his qualities of courage, commitment and selflessness, while dominating all aspects of the Cal Men's Lacrosse experience.

Some programs bestow a number to a player based on merit or the quality of their play. This award carries higher standards. The Sciutto #4 Award is based primarily on strength of character and is the highest honor achievable by a Cal Men's Lacrosse player.

This year's Sciutto #4 jersey will be worn by Master’s in Data Science student, Finn Meagher.

“Returning for a sixth year in and of itself demonstrates Finn’s unmatched commitment to Cal Men’s Lacrosse,” said Webster. “He works a full-time finance job, he takes Master’s classes in Data Science at night, he leads our defense and he loves this program. Finn will go down as one of the all-time great Golden Bears.”

The Cal Men’s Lacrosse season begins on the final weekend of January when the Golden Bears host UC Davis in California Memorial Stadium.
