Coach Deano Retires After 11 Years
BERKELEY, CA – After 11 years of dedicated service to Cal Men's Lacrosse, Assistant Coach Christopher Dean, affectionately known as "Coach Deano," has announced his retirement. His departure marks the end of an era for the program, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering commitment, multifaceted expertise, and profound personal connection.
Coach Deano was truly a jack-of-all-trades, coaching every facet of the game with remarkable skill and insight. From strategic plays to individual development, his comprehensive knowledge was instrumental in shaping each team's success. Beyond the X's and O's, Coach Deano ensured the game day atmosphere was always professional, reflecting the high standards he upheld for the program.
A player-favorite, Coach Deano was much more than a coach; he was a mentor, a father figure, and a dependable friend. He masterfully blended empathy with tough love, pushing players to excel while always offering steadfast support. His self-deprecating humor often made the team laugh, creating a lighthearted and positive environment. Coach Deano was also an elite listener and adviser, always ready to lend an ear and offer wise counsel. His protective nature was evident in his willingness to argue with referees to advocate for his players, always putting their well-being first.
His generosity extended beyond the field, as he was known to offer car rides home to assistant coaches in need, showcasing his genuine care for everyone in the program. His deep personal bonds were further exemplified by his role as Godfather to Head Coach Ned Webster’s first-born, Ella (10).
"Coach Deano will be sorely missed, but his impact will never be forgotten," said Webster. "He embodied everything you could want in a coach and a person. His dedication, his humor, and his rock solid support have left an indelible mark on generations of Cal Men's Lacrosse players and coaches. As he joked, 'I'll still be at games, I'll just be slamming my hat and yelling at the refs from the opposite sideline."
The Cal Men's Lacrosse program extends its deepest gratitude to Coach Deano for his 11 years of exceptional service. His contributions to the team's success and the lives of its members will resonate for decades to come.
Thank you, Deano. We love you.
